In a quaint shop residing in The Haymarket, we see (very clearly) the droll existence of Alfred in his small world. Among other things, he is in charge of receiving and then displaying Mediterranean sponges. This in itself is quaint and oh so pertinent to the charming story. Alfred "borrows" a particularly beautiful sponge one day after its arrival in the shop (does anyone these days even bother to scrutinize a sponge?). Cut to the seacoast on the Mediterranean and a beautiful young woman. In this dreamworld Alfred is in love with the dark beauty...and by all appearances and words of profession, she is in love with this middle-aged man of no great consequence. Here the sponge gains its prominence in a very romantic and lovely way. Cut back to current time in the story, Alfred's return to the shop, and a conversation with his co-worker. Ironic, and demanding a smile from the reader. Such a poignant conclusion.
This short story by Valerie stands among her finest, having as she does an unerring ability to set scene and show characters in altogether unique storylines. Truly wistful, nostalgic, and so worth a read.
